HRF is based in NY and Alex, who you’re calling out here by name, is based in SF. $228k is NOT luxurious in SF. That’s condo money, not house money. I obviously don’t know his home life, but if he’s raising a family that’s barely enough unless he has another spouse/partner also working. People running nonprofits taking no salary are either: 1. Not doing it full-time or 2. Have family money and do not need to work. Locking people out of working in the nonprofit world because they don’t have a trust fund is regressive. There are plenty of small nonprofits that have great intentions but do not have much impact. HRF has $30,000,000 a year and, you must concede, has impact and donors who expect results. Nonprofits of this scale have full-time employees who need money to support their families. It’s not unheard of for a Chief Strategy Officer in the for profit world making half a million or more in total compensation in Silicon Valley. If you don’t agree with his compensation, talk to the donors. Or talk to him. They’re both engaging in voluntary acts.
